“Ministry in Times of Disaster”
WHAT
Church World Service, Interfaith Trauma Response Training (ITRT) and the Fraser Counseling Center will offer a six-hour orientation workshop for faith leaders and caregivers from the faith community. The workshop focuses on the benefits of preparedness in the event of a disaster - natural or human caused -whether they are hurricanes, hazardous materials incidents, or terrorism. Being prepared can reduce fear, anxiety and sense of loss that accompany disasters. “Ministry in Times of Disaster” covers the emotional and spiritual impact on victims, families, the church and the community. Advanced preparation for a disaster by learning appropriate responses and interventions can reduce the short and long-term negative impact on survivors and their community by assisting caregivers in meeting important emotional and spiritual needs of those who are affected. The workshop is interactive.
Dr. Katrina Cochran, the presenter, is a Church World Service Consultant. She comes with extensive experience from the recovery effort after the Oklahoma City bombing of 1995, two and one half years of workshops and training seminars for clergy and caregivers in the New York City and Washington D.C. areas following September 11, 2001 and since last fall, workshops for caregivers in Florida.
The Rev. Dr. Alan Baroody, co-presenter, is a member of the Church World Service Spiritual and Emotional Care Resource Team. As a minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), he has served local congregations for fifteen years and directed mental health and pastoral counseling centers for twelve years. Throughout his career as a pastor and as a mental health professional, he has been active in various aspects of disaster relief efforts.
